It's being debated more than the weather in Britain at the moment. Is it flu? just a bad cold, a virus maybe. We are all being effected by this huge swath of colds and flu at the moment. The Christmas break and the build up too it is a time when people socialise more, hug and kiss more, get stressed, rush around to finish jobs. We put ourselves under a huge amount of pressure. All these can lower the immune system, and also contribute to spreading colds and flu.
How do we distinguish between a cold and flu though?
Flu (full name Influenza)
There are similarities to a cold, however there are more severe symptoms as well:
Sweating (Can feel clammy and cold but still sweat)
Achy and Painful muscles, can be sudden onset.
Fatigue (tiredness)
Feeling of feintness.
Dry and chesty cough
Fever of around 38 – 40C.
Colds:
A cold is definitely the more bearable of the two, with symptoms including one, several or all of the list below:
Blocked nose
Runny nose and or eyes
Coughing
Sneezing
Headache
Earache
Mild fever
What can you do help prevent a cold or flu ?
Eat a healthy and well balanced diet to make sure you are receiving the right nutrients for good health. In particular, certain foods are especially good at supporting our immune system, whose job it is to fight colds and flu.
- Zinc – Meat, Dairy products, cashew nuts and spinach.
- Vitamin C – Red and green peppers, kiwi fruit, brocolli, kale, pineapple,
mango and oranges.
(if you can’t eat these for health reasons, as a Health Professional for advice on a
good quality vitamin C supplement.)
- Vitamin E – Nuts, sunflower seeds, avocados and fish.
- Water – Hydration is essential. Warm water with a slice of ginger root and a slice of lemon with
a teaspoon of manuka honey can be soothing and warming.
