Good nutritious food. Every calorie has to be good wholesome food, otherwise there is a danger of ill
health, as your diet is so micro.
The Gastric Band is a very simple tool. It is a small tube, which can be filled with fluid via a tube. The tube has an access port, which in effect is a small disc where a needle can be inserted to inject the fluid that is needed to inflate the band. This then enables the band to be filled gradually.
Importantly, the gastric band is not a surgical procedure that changes/alters the stomach permanently.
It can be completely reversed.
The band is fitted in place using key hole surgery. The patient is anaesthetised and the procedure is performed with them slightly tilted up.
It is fitted around the upper part of the stomach, and attached in place with a small stitch.
Approximately 6 weeks after surgery, fluid is injected via the port to gradually increase the restriction. The fluid is a saline solution so completely harmless.
- It is this restriction that helps to form a pouch, which in effect creates a tiny stomach.
- Food that is eaten passes into this pouch, giving a sensation of feeling full more quickly.
- It gets passed through the centre of the band into the remainder of the stomach, and continues its journey through the digestive system.
- You will only need to stay in hospital for one night, unless there are complications.
- Then you will go through up to a six week phased food programme, firstly clear fluids to help things settle post surgery, then pureed foods (good whole foods so every calorie is nutritious), then mashed then whole foods again.
- Pre-fills you have a factory setting, so you will feel hungry, so small meals, three times a day, no snacks, and no bingeing. This is difficult, but with grit and determination you make it to your first fill. Then slowly but surely you are given restriction.
Modified Food Consistency
Initially after surgery there is a need to restrict the consistency of food that you consume. This is due to the presence of swelling from your surgery. Following a sleeve or gastric bypass you will also have internal stitches that need time to heal. Having foods that are too solid too quickly can be exceptionally dangerous and must be avoided. As the weeks progress there is more room in your new stomach and you can gradually increase the consistency of food back to a normal consistency.
