Massage Expert Nicole Antras has written an interesting article:
The process makes our muscles move, includes small amounts of calcium being released as part of the chemical message that signals the muscle to go into action. When the muscle stops moving, the calcium should return to the area around the fibre where it has been stored. If the muscle is damaged, it can find it difficult to get rid of the calcium, so this small amount can get stuck in the muscle fibre. The tight contraction that happens pulls on the sides of the muscle fibre surrounding the tender spot, creating a Trigger point. The causes of this can include:
Overworked & tired muscles.
Poor training and warming up techniques,
Lack of sleep and stress.
When treating a Trigger Point it is useful to keep the muscle/s warm, stretch, drink plenty water throughout the day and use massage pressure to separate the muscle fibres and break down the “knot”. It is a good idea to have a regular massage initially to ensure the Trigger Point does not reoccur.
Having a regular massage, such as a Deep Tissue massage, can specifically help to identify and treat any Trigger Points early on which will prevent a build up and ongoing discomfort. Oils can be used to help sooth and access the deep tissue problem.
