In my many years as a Consultant Nutritionist I have heard many patients use phrases and words that hold them back. Phrases such as:
'My food belly'
'My Eating Disorder'
'I never keep weight off, I never have'
'I can't stop eating chocolate'
My partner loves wine so I have to drink it'
'I have to eat cakes in the staff room, people will think I'm bad if I don't'
Do any of these sound familiar or similar to things you say ?
The common themes here are blame and self labelling.
For example, if we say 'my eating disorder' we are claiming it to be our own, and that in itself will define us. If we change the label, we are able to change how we perceive ourselves, and in turn make other changes.
Also, if we say 'I have to eat cake because .......' we are making other people responsible for our decisions about food, which allows us to make inappropriate choices.
The secret is to disown and detach from the labels and blame game and change the words.
'I have changed my eating habits'
'My relationship with food is healthy'
'The cake in the staff room looks lovely, but I don't want any now'
Give it a try, change your inner mantra ............
